“I met Elisa Díaz Castelo in a seminar on Proust. Whom do we find in the hidden layers of her speech? There are echoes and playful rewritings of Octavio Paz and Vicente Huidobro, but also the influence of Wislawa Szymborska –and, farther back, of Sor Juana, who shares Díaz Castelo's interest in science and its nomenclatures. US American poetry also reveals its mark when the conversational register turns inward. Her work is also indebted to Greek tragedy and its choral structure, which breaks down the epic into voices. And this, in counterpoint, leads me back to Proust, the memorialist who wanted to say everything, the god of details who once captivated that young poet. I remember being struck by her sensitivity as a reader, enthralled as she was by the author who saw his whole body of work as a cathedral full of connections and symmetries, a poetics of intermittency.”

Elisa Díaz Castelo (Ciudad de México, 1986). Poet and translator. She wins the Bellas Artes Poetry Prize 2020 for El reino de lo no lineal; the Alonso Vidal National Poetry Prize 2017 for her first collection, Principia (Tierra Adentro, México); and the Bellas Artes Prize in Literary Translation 2019 for her rendering in Spanish of Ocean Vuong's Night Sky with Exit Wounds. Her work in English has appeared in Poetry International, Tupelo Quarterly, and Border Crossing, among others. Her poems in Spanish have been published in Letras Libres, Revista de la Universidad, Tierra Adentro, Este País, Periódico de Poesía, and elsewhere. She received the Fundación Para las Letras Mexicanas fellowship (2016-2017-2018) and two Jóvenes Creadores FONCA fellowship (2015-2016, 2018-2019).
